New Safety Standard Effectively Eliminates Corded Window Coverings

Outdated window blinds with exposed cords in need of replacement.

The Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) recently announced the approval of the updated voluntary window covering safety standard from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). This revised safety standard, ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022, is designed to eliminate free-hanging cords and connectors that can potentially lead to accidents and injuries. Window coverings included in this ruling are: cellular, pleated, roman, solar, and vertical.

What does this mean?

This new standard will require the vast majority of window coverings sold in the US to be cordless or feature inaccessible, short, or permanently held-down cords and chains.

When does ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 go into effect?

The compliance date for the new standard for all companies manufacturing, distributing or selling window covering products in the US is June 1, 2024. After this date, window coverings sold in the US will be required to eliminate the use of free hanging operating cords, free hanging tilt cords and multiple cord connectors.

Does this apply to custom products or just stock items?

The updated standard applies to all window coverings, including both stock and made-to-order products.

What about my existing window treatments?

The standard only applies to newly manufactured products, so your existing window treatments are not affected. However, any reorders or replacements will need to comply fully with the standard after June 1, 2024.
